Why you do not need Photoshop

A PSD holds its layers and, when Maximize Compatibility is on, a full-size flat copy of the picture. This converter reads both in your browser, so you need no Photoshop. With the flat copy, your PNG is that exact picture; without it, the picture is rebuilt from layers. Check a file first in the PSD viewer.

PSD to PNG: transparent background

PNG has an alpha channel, so transparent pixels in the PSD stay transparent. Many designs have a white background layer, though, and it is part of the picture. To drop it, press Preview, hide that layer and export; the picture is then rebuilt from layers. For a solid color, PSD to JPG fills transparency with any color.

PSD to PNG layers: canvas size or trimmed

Save every layer to get a ZIP with one PNG per layer, named after the layer, in folders by group. Keep canvas size makes each PNG as large as the document with the layer in place, so the stack lines up again in any editor. Trim to content cuts each PNG to its own pixels, for icons.

Size, DPI and bit depth

100% keeps every pixel; 50% and 25% give lighter files for previews. The DPI stored in the PSD is written into each PNG. Files at 16 or 32 bits per channel become 8-bit PNG, and CMYK colors are converted by formula, close but not exact, so keep the original PSD for print.

When a PSD opens blank

If Maximize Compatibility was off when the file was saved, there is no flat picture inside, and system previews and many converters show blank.
